Contains an account of the life and death of John Giles Price; descriptions of conditions and events on Norfolk Island and on the Hobson's Bay prison hulks; and reflections on freewill, destiny and other philosophical ideas. Garrett identifies Mr and Mrs Price and the Reverend Thomas Rogers with Marcus Clarke's characters Maurice Frere, Mrs Frere, and the Reverend James North in For the term of his natural life.

Henry Beresford Garrett was transported to Norfolk Island in the 1840s. After his release, he went to Victoria and was convicted for bank robbery in 1855. Sent to the hulks, he witnessed Price's murder. He went to New Zealand in 1861, where he wrote The demon while in prison. John Giles Price was a civil commandant of Norfolk Island from Aug. 1846 until Jan. 1853. He was appointed inspector-general of penal establishments in Victoria in Jan. 1854, and was murdered by con...
